Goleen
Past and Present
is a
compilation of articles about Goleen parish over its long history. From Bronze
Age copper mines and field monuments, through the hard times of the 19th and early
20th century to the affluent, but depopulated 21st century, Goleen
Parish ‘with water on three sides and looking east’ has remained throughout a
close, thriving community. This book
chronicles aspects of life at the end of the Mizen Peninsula, the most
south-westerly point of Ireland.
Compiled and edited by Denis Downey on behalf of Goleen and District
Community Council

BOOK LAUNCH
The launch in the Harbour View Hotel, Schull on November 9th was most successful. Almost 200 Goleen parishioners and friends
enjoyed the evening. There was an
introduction by the MC, Connie O’Driscoll,
speeches by Paul O’Sullivan,
Chairman, Goleen & District Community Council, Carol Gilbert, Southern
Star, on behalf of the printers Inspire and Denis Downey before the book was
launched by P. J. Sheehan, T.D. This
was followed by refreshments and dancing to the music of Vincent Crowley until
3 am. Book sales soared and Denis had a
busy night signing copies. The book has
been very well received and is selling well.
There are only 2000 copies so make sure you get your order in for
Christmas!
